This class is an exploration of the transition from childhood to adulthood. What are your individual strengths and challenges? How are you influenced by your family, friends, and various environments? How much do you know about your history and heritage? What are your core beliefs and values, and how do those shape how you deal with challenges? What are your goals for completing high school and the immediate years after high school? To help us on this journey, we’ll read four novels focused on different aspects of "coming of age" and Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" about success. Students will be assigned a variety of papers and essays throughout the year to relate course topics and readings to their own experiences. (1 English credit)

Session 5: HW 1- Success talks response

For HW, go to this link at NPR:  http://www.npr.org/2013/10/25/240777690/success.

There are 5 radio segments about success. Choose 3 to listen to and then complete the following for EACH talk:

  • Name the talk and the speaker.
  • Summarize the points each speaker is making; be specific.
  • Discuss what you agree and/or disagree with about what they are saying about success (be specific). Are there examples from your own life you can relate to what they are saying?
  • Explain which of the 5 characteristics related to success we have been discussing are tied to each talk. The 5 characteristics are: grit (determination), enthusiasm (passion), resilience (ability to push through hard times), self-control (discipline), kindness
Your responses must be typed and properly formatted.  Check for grammar and spelling.
