This class is an exploration of the transition from childhood to adulthood. What are your individual strengths and challenges? How are you influenced by your family, friends, and various environments? How much do you know about your history and heritage? What are your core beliefs and values, and how do those shape how you deal with challenges? What are your goals for completing high school and the immediate years after high school? To help us on this journey, we’ll read four novels focused on different aspects of "coming of age" and Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" about success. Students will be assigned a variety of papers and essays throughout the year to relate course topics and readings to their own experiences. (1 English credit)

IRP Due on Thursday!!!

All this week you should be working on your IRP.  Due on Thursday!  The project must show effort, clearly relate to your book and be interactive.  Your typed book report and gallery card are also due by Thursday.  See the resources section of this blog if you need help with those two assignments.

Two other priority assignments:

  • Completed self-description
  • Completed Myers Briggs response

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Extra credit opportunity! Write a love letter to someone in need.

The "Write More Love Letters" project has a special request for letters of encouragement to be sent to 3 specific people.  You can earn extra credit by choosing one person and writing to them.  You can use the one you wrote as a base and edit it to meet the recipient's specific needs for encouragement. You will have to complete it by next Thursday to get the extra credit.  This means,  you would have to turn it in to me for edits on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Here is the link for more information on the recipients: http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=87ea529be1b2d6065d52fc357&id=6b040707a9&e=b93c81ef4a

10/18 HW #23 Complete typed, double-spaced book report and work on IRP

You must have your book report and creative project (both must be done well) to receive a grade this session.

  • Edits to Myers Briggs response

Class Assignments for Monday, Oct. 15

1. We will review PSAT critical reading and writing sections as a warm up today and Tuesday.

2. Go to this site and watch the power point describing different types of colleges: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/find-colleges/college-101/types-of-colleges-the-basics

3. All students will register for an account with College Board. Once you have signed up, go to "Make a Plan", then to "Find Colleges" and begin to research schools.  You will each compile a list of 6-8 schools of interest, including safety, target and reach schools (see descriptions below). As you find schools you like, pull them into the "My Colleges" tool at the bottom of the page. Consider location, your academics (testing scores and GPA), whether the schools are small, medium or large, as well as majors available, costs and other factors.

Reach - Target - Safety (from www.chooseyourfuture.org)

Aim to apply to five colleges and to complete five scholarship applications and the FAFSA by the end of January of your senior year.
Why five? When you apply to only one or two schools, you take a risk. You might be turned down, or you might close off your options too soon. The five schools you apply to should include reach, target, and safety schools.
Reach:
Your top choices, the most academically challenging schools on your list. You should include a couple of long shots, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Target:
Schools where you would be very happy and are likely to be admitted. These are your realistic choices.
Safety:
Schools where you are almost certain to be admitted and where you think you would be happy and get a good education.

10/11 HW #21 IRP week 6

BE CREATIVE! You must complete your independent book this weekend and complete your IRP week 6 response. This is a short but very important response. You must decide BEFORE you start writing what creative project you will present at the end of this session to teach your classmates about the book you read.  Your response must be detailed and include exactly how you will put your project together, what supplies you'll need, describe how it will be interactive and how it relates to your book.

10/9 HW #20 Self description

Use the handout given in class to type (and double-space) a description of yourself as a friend, student, family member and individual.  You must have about 1-2 paragraphs or 10 sentences written about each of the 4 areas.  For the categories: friend, student and family member, you must talk to two other people to get their views of you in those areas.  Be sure to use specific examples throughout your writing. Here is the handout if you need it.
